The Delaware Charity Challenge is a unique fundraising and athletic competition designed to give organizations, families, and individuals a fun way to raise money and awareness for their favorite causes. Teams that enter may designate any charity they want as a beneficiary of funds they raise as a team. Part of the proceeds from the race registrations and the race sponsorships will go into a prize pool that will be distributed among the charities that raise the most money and to the charities of the teams that win the individual race events on the day of the Delaware Charity Challenge.

Team 5K Races

The Delaware Charity Challenge primarily consists of team 5K races and an adventure relay race.

For the Delaware Charity Challenge 5k races, all your team has to do is pick a race to compete in. If your team wins that race, your charity will win some prize money for your efforts.

On the day of the Spring Delaware Charity Challenge, there will be 5K races in addition to the Adventure Challenge Relay. The race divisions are briefly described below.

Competitive Men's Team 5K

This race will consist of teams comprised of up to seven men. Teams will need at least four runners to compete in the race and teams with less than four runners will be moved into the fun run/walk category. For scoring purposes, the fifth, sixth, and seventh runners will act as displacers. There is no age requirement to the team composition or members. The overall team with lowest score will win this race and their designated charity will receive a portion of the prize pool money for their victory.

Competitive Women's Team 5K

This race will consist of teams comprised of up to seven women. Teams will need at least four runners to qualify to win the race, and teams with less than four runners will be moved into the fun run/walk category. For scoring purposes, the fifth, sixth, and seventh runners will act as displacers. There is no age limit to the team composition or members. The overall team with lowest score will win this race and their designated charity will receive a portion of the prize pool money for their victory.

Competitive Co-Ed Team 5K

This race will consist of teams comprised of up to seven men and women. Teams will need at least four runners to qualify to win the race, and at least two of these runners should be women and two of them should be men. Thus, a team of four runners (three women, one man) could compete but could not win this race, but a team of four runners (two women, two men) could.

The only combinations of team member compositions that can qualify to win this race are:

  • Two women, Two men (4 members)
  • Three women, two men (5 members)
  • Three men, two women (5 members)
  • Four women, two men (6 members)
  • Four men, two women (6 members)
  • Three women, three men (6 members)
  • Four women, three men (7 members)
  • Four men, three women (7 members)

For scoring purposes, the first two men on the team and the first two women on the team who cross the finish line will count toward your team's total score, and the other runners will act as displacers. There is no age limit to the team composition or members. The overall team with lowest score will win this race and their designated charity will receive a portion of the prize pool money for their victory.

5K Fun Run / Walk

Not looking to compete but still want to participate? There will also be a non-competitive team fun 5K run/walk. There is no limit on the team size or composition of men and women on the team. Participants in this run will still be timed and the monies these teams raise will still go to their charities. There will be no additional prize for the winning team(s) of this race. Individuals can also participate in the 5K fun run/walk.

Adventure Challenge Team Relay

There will also be a separate Adventure Challenge Relay race for teams interested in something a little different. The charity of the team that wins the Adventure Challenge Team Relay will receive a portion of the prize pool money for their victory. More information on the Adventure Challenge Relay can be found here.

Virtual Teams

If you have a team or charity and want to participate, but can't make it to Delaware, you can still form a team and select a charity and join in on the fun. Virtual teams can help their selected charities raise money and climb the leaderboard, but would be ineligible to win any Prize Pool money on race day or as part of the Race to Raise Fundraising Competition because they are not participating in any of the actual physical races. There is a nominal fee of $25 for creating a virtual team.
